About the Committee

We’re looking for 10 people across Newfoundland and Labrador who care for children 0-6, and who are interested in steering the Jimmy Pratt Foundation’s work on Early Learning and Childcare.

As part of the JPF Childcare Steering Committee, you will (1) share your own experiences navigating the Early Learning and Childcare system, (2) provide feedback on the Jimmy Pratt Foundation’s advocacy priorities and (3) build your own understanding of the Early Learning and Childcare system in NL. Committee members will be compensated for their time with an honorarium of $600.

Qualifications

We believe that the people close to kids have important insights into the challenges facing children and families across our province. If you’re a parent, caretaker, or educator for children 0-6 living in NL, that’s the only qualification you need to be a valued part of our council. We’ll also be looking for folks with a professional or personal interest in policy.

Commitment

You’ll need to commit to attend four 90-minute meetings between May 2024-April 2025. These meetings will take place approximately every 3 months on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-7:30pm (Newfoundland)/5:30-7pm (Labrador). Here is a rough schedule for 2024-2025, with some planned topics:

May 2024: Outdoor Play in Licensed Childcare
August 2024: ECE wages and working conditions
November 2024: TBC
February 2025: TBC

You can sit on the ELCC Steering Committee for up to 2 years.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Our childcare system needs to reach every child and family in NL, regardless of their circumstances. While a 10-person council could never capture the diversity of our province, we’re taking steps to make sure that we have a range of lived and professional experiences at the table.

Council members will receive an honorarium of $600 ($450 when you submit your signed contract, $150 at the end of the year-long term)
We will work with committee members to ensure that our online meetings meet their accessibility needs (including but not limited to translation and ASL interpretation)

How does this committee relate to the Board of Directors?

This committee was formed to inform the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Staff on Early Learning and Childcare issues. It arises from our commitments to equity and collaboration, and our recognition that we needed a meaningful but accessible way for the people closest to children to participate in our Foundation’s work.

Sitting on this Committee does not constitute a seat on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. You do not have governance or fiduciary responsibility for the Foundation. The Staff and Board of the Foundation have the ultimate authority to make decisions about what direction the Foundation’s work takes.

About the Jimmy Pratt Foundation

The Jimmy Pratt Foundation is a private family foundation based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

We support research and policy development that helps children in Newfoundland and Labrador thrive, even in the face of adverse circumstances. We advocate directly to governments, collaborate with communities, and commission research to help children reach their full potential.

Our current focus is on the expansion of 10-dollar-a-day childcare in Newfoundland and Labrador. This investment in our kids has amazing potential – if we get it right. But we need the voices of people closest to kids and their families to make sure we’re headed in the right direction.
